How to set various styles for records with the same geometry type within one layer – categories

  1. Open the layer properties
  2. Go to Display Query – Categories tab.

Now you have to decide which column (or columns) from this layer you want to use to create categories. In this instance we will use Geometry_Collection column.

When columns are set, please click Add button to open drop down list.

You can now select one of the following 2 options:
    Add values
All unique values from the selected columns are displayed in a list. You can select which records you want to add to the categories list. Please note that in the bottom-left corner you also have to select a geometry type for the selected record(s). To select multiple records hold Control (to select individual records) or Shift key (to select a range of records). Alternatively you can use 'Select All' button to select all records. You have to use this option if you want to set styles for records in Geometry Collection layers.
    Add heading
Clicking on this option will create a heading. Headings behave similarly to group layers. You can use them to control the visibility of all records inside a particular heading section.

You can enter "*" (star) into Value field to quickly set a style for all values from a single category.

In this instance we are creating categories for a geometry collection layer so we have to select Add values option.

You have to add each record type separately. For instance, please select all point type records on the list and check "point" option below and click OK. Then select Add values option again, select desired polygon type records, set band style: "polygon"  and click OK.

    In this instance we’ve added:

    • 2 point type records
    • 2 line type records
    • 2 polygon type records

This is how Categories tab looks when all records after repeating this process for line and polygon records :

If you accidentally set wrong geometry type for selected records you can always correct that mistake by using the small arrow next to the style preview. It allows you to change the record geometry type.

You can now change style for each record by clicking the style preview.

If all settings are ready you can click OK button to accept them and see the results.
