Each data layer is protected by the Shares tool. In this place you can control read/write sharing permissions of each folder or file in the repository. Earthlight is using a "Layer" permission model. It means that you can control layers permissions and these settings are propagated to maps. For example:
You can restrict a layer for certain user(s). If this layer is added to a map and the user will open it then he/she will see an access denied icon next to the layer name. The layer itself will be invisible/inaccessible for this certain user but map will open without a problem. This is a typical view of a layer with deny read setting:
Shares tool dialog window contains 4 sections:
- Select one or more users or user groups
In the first section you can select for which user(s) or group(s) you want to change the permissions. To select multiple users/groups please hold CTRL button while selecting. - Folders and layers
In this section you can select for which folder/file you want to set the permissions. - Set / Clear
The third section contains 2 sets of buttons: Set and Clear. These sets allows you to add/remove the permissions for the selected file/folder. - Sharing permissions
The last section displays information about permissions for the currently selected file/folder.
Sharing permissions section additionally allows fast permission edit. You can change permissions for selected file/folder by using the checkboxes next to the user/group name. You can also delete all settings for the individual user/group by using the Remove button.
How to allow/deny access by using Shares tool in few quick steps
To set permissions for a folder or layer please do the following steps:
- Please select one or more users/groups for which you want to set a permission. To select multiple users/groups please hold CTRLbutton while selecting.
- When desired users/groups are being selected please move to Folders and layers section and select for which folder/file you want to set the permissions. Please be aware than you can select only one folder/file at a time.
- Now please use the buttons in the Set section to allow/deny access to selected file/folder for selected users/groups. You can always clear the current permissions by using the buttons placed in Clear section.
- Please click OK button to accept and save new permissions settings or Cancel to exit the configuration window without saving the new permissions settings.
