Snapping feature in Earthlight is a feature which allows you to snap mouse cursor to selected parts of geometries from a specified layer or group of layers. To start using Snap feature, it is required to set snapping layers and desired snapping point types first.

To do this please open context menu with your right mouse button and select 'Trace settings'.

Please note

Context menu will be available only when you are in editing mode and have a tool from the 'Add New Geometries' group selected.

  • In the 'Snap/trace to:' dropdown, you can select to which layers cursor will be snapped. It is possible to select an built-in group like 'Stencil layers', groups of layers or specific layers from your map.

You can select more than one item and all selected items will be marked with orange colour.

  • By 'Snap to:' checkboxes  you can determine to which geometry parts, the tool will be snap.

There are 4 geometry features that could be used for snapping:

Edges - it is a geometry edge

Vertices -it is a geometry node

End points - it can be geometry start or end point

Mid points - it is a point in the middle of an edge

When all snapping settings are properly set, you can start using snapping feature. To start, please open context menu and select the 'Snap: ' option. When snapping is active, bolded 'Snap : On' text will be displayed in context menu.

Now you can hover over the snapping points (edge, vertex, midpoint or endpoint) which you have chosen in previous step. Icon of snapping point type will be displayed and optionally name of the snapping point, name of layer if it is set in Trace settings on UI Hints tab.

When your cursor is in a desired location, you can add a node by clicking with left mouse button.

Please note

You can turn on or off snapping feature any time during edition.
